Resident Says “Memo Supports Wray” but Misses the Boat

Posted by ryan on February 19, 2008

From today’s Letters to the Editor section of the News & Record,

“The recently published black book memo throws new light on the entire David Wray issue in terms of when and why.

This book appears to have been justified and not racist. Are we to believe that the investigators couldn’t find the memo? Was this a deliberate witch hunt and execution? Perhaps.

Mitch Johnson should soon issue a public apology to Wray.

I should remind Frank and everyone else that according to Mitchell Johnson the issue was that Wray lied about the existence of the black book.  “His decision to resign was an assumption on his part was based on what he thought I was going to do,” said Johnson.  At this point it does appear that he did lie to me.”

That was AN issue but not THE issue. ANOTHER issue was that the book was motivated by racist intentions and that it was used for illegitimate purposes.

David Wray was locked out of his office, there was discussion from MJ to DW about being relieved of his duty, hence DW was “forced to resign” plus I do believe there were other retirement promises made which I do believe were never delivered upon. You have to put MJ’s question about the alledged “Black Book” into a proper context and time frame. MJ had been told, by DW, about a photo line-up folder of which MJ expressed little interest, that is until the line-up folder was given the new name of “The Blak Book” originating with some of the GPD black officers. So you might say that MJ did have an oppertunity to see the line-up folder that some call “The Blak Book.”

  3. Ryan,
Consider the fact that Johnson was asking for something he felt was sinister.
Wray would not have considered a routine photo line up book sinister.
Sort of like Johnson’s “Oh that memo!”
Nothing that I have seen has indicated Wray would have intentionally lied about that book.
Also consider, why did Johnson present the incomplete book to the council? A book of photos with no explanation when the explanation was in his possession?
That’s called trying to CYA. And not a very good attempt at it.

In the taped interview the city released of the last conversation between Wray and Johnson Wray asked, “Is this about termination?” And Johnson answered, “Yes.” Now Johnson claims he was surprised when Wray resigned. Now why do I have a problem believing that? BB
